Having an Austin Tea Party

Forum with Newt

Jackson Fuller, getting Speaker Newt Gingrich to sign his Constitution. He and his sister, Elizabeth, volunteered to help at our event to earn a seat at our forum. Newt waves goodbye to the crowd.

Thank you very much to all who attended the Newt Gingrich forum held at the DoubleTree Hotel yesterday. It was an excellent opportunity to meet with an American political icon and to listen to him and let him know the Tea Party movement's vision for America.

In addition to the questions posed to Speaker Gingrich at the forum, we had a lot of time over the last couple of days to meet with Adam Waldeck of American Solutions (Newt's organization) to let him know about tea party concerns regarding the speaker's prior positions on global warming and the NY23 race. Adam was great to work with - he heard our concerns and gave us the reasoning behind the Speaker's positions. We will have a more detailed report this weekend.

The star of the show was Lily Wright, who gave a stirring and well received speech on "Why It's Great to be an American." She set the perfect tone for our meeting - one of a positive vision for America based on limited government and Constitutional principles. Thanks very much to Lily!

We are pleased to report that fiscal responsibility is alive and well in the tea party community in Austin and Central Texas. Greg and I took a chance by fronting Austin Tea Party Patriots' cost of the event, incurring significant expenditures for room and AV charges and the signage, etc. Y'all were extremely generous with your donations, and as a result we are pleased to report that we raised $3,064 in donations at the event, which will be sufficient not only to cover the cost of the event, but to allow Austin Tea Party Patriots to purchase a new computer and video editing software in order to allow us to produce YouTubes that we have had to outsource in the past. (Since this will be ATPP's property, we"ll need your ideas for videos. More on that in the coming week or so.)

Thanks especially to Tim Dunn, Chairman of Empower Texans and Texans for Fiscal Responsibility, who was a great moderator and flew here from Midland on his own dime. And we could not have put on the event without the generous assistance of Mary Beaver both prior to and at the event. She was awesome! Thanks also to |Shirley and Craig Markley, Yvonne Bedell, Kathy Holliman, Stephen, Elizabeth, and Jackson Fuller, Ed Schlechen, Ruth Farris, and Diane Fulton, for their help with this event.
