In an election year sparked by back-and-forth attacks by Bill White and Rick Perry – but no scheduled debate between them – the Democrat and Republican candidates for Texas governor are now for the first and perhaps only time matched up against one another in a virtual debate presented by the Austin Tea Party Patriots and Common Sense Texans. Based on questions provided by grassroots conservatives throughout Texas earlier this year, this newly-released virtual debate provides an opportunity for Texans and others around the country to compare the candidates on a series of key policy questions.
“We were impressed by the candidates’ grasp of the issues, especially since they may not have heard the questions phrased in quite the same way before,” said Greg Holloway, a member of the Austin Tea Party Patriots board. “We think their answers provide a strong glimpse into their policy views and their vision for the state. They clearly listened to what we were asking and, for the most part, gave substantive answers that directly addressed our inquiries.” The debate can be found on the You Tube channel of the Austin Tea Party Patriots at http://www.youtube.com/user/AustinTeaPtyPatriots#p/u (A summary of the debate topics is listed below.)
“Each of the candidates treated our interview request and the debate itself with great respect,” says Holloway, who, together with his wife, Austin Tea Party Patriots founder Judy Holloway, conducted the interviews (with help from activist Shirley Markley) in February 2010. Most of these videos were released separately before the primaries, but never before in this head-to-head format.
Holloway commented that he was especially pleased that former Houston Mayor Bill White joined the debate with Governor Perry. “Mayor White showed a lot of confidence in answering questions directly from grassroots conservatives. And Governor Perry was very gracious with his time. Frankly, that’s what we encourage all politicians to do – make the campaign about performance, issues and ideas. We’re very pleased about the high level of this debate.”
The 11 YouTube videos cover an introductory video and the following ten topics: (1) property taxes, (2) state spending, (3) illegal immigration, (4) state sovereignty, (5) American exceptionalism and education, (6) voter ID, (7) transportation, (8) privatization, (9) governing priorities and (10) public mistakes.
The goals of the Austin Tea Party Patriots and Common Sense Texans are to educate, advocate and support citizens and their public servants in the group’s five core values: limited government, fiscal responsibility, personal responsibility, the rule of law and national sovereignty.
